Take giri do or bamboo cutting is the next step up from cutting matting.

Bamboo should be green and at least 45 -50 mm (2") in diameter to give a swordsman a realistic feed back of tip speed and power required to make a successful cut.

Cutting dry bamboo should be avoided as is could seriously damage a blade. Also, the size and construction of a blade will set the upper bamboo diameter size a katana can slice through effectively.
