Batto giri do - target-cutting with a swift draw and cut action.

Batto-giri-do; the way of drawing one’s blade and actually cutting a target in one swift motion.

Many classic sword styles
koryu relied predominantly on a fast draw and cut with the sword katana for either defence or attack. Many of those techniques are reflected in modern iaido, where students practice a fast but controlled draw, followed by a cut towards an imaginary enemy teki.

In comparison to iaido, batto-giri-do adds a more realistic dimension to the draw and cut action by actually having the student cut either through a stationary or moving target.

Student Ben Chow, sho-dan, demonstrates a batto-giri combination of a draw and single handed diagonal upwards cut (katate kiriage) followed by a right diagonal downwards cut (migi kesa giri) and left diagonal up-wards cut (hidari kiriage).
