Test cutting or suemono-giri.
In this kata the target is placed in a horizontal position giving the sword tester maximum power to cut into the target. This was the basic set-up for testing a blade's strength, sharpness and durability. These tests were only performed by swordsmen of the highest calibre as a small mistake on their part could ruin an otherwise expensive and perfect blade.
